Felting a Picture
 

Felting a picture is a perfect activity for a whole class of children. Beautiful, creative results are easily achieved. Everyone, including parent helpers, all have great fun.

St Josephs School, Ashburton, spend a week every year focusing on fibre. So take twenty-five 5-6 year olds, 1 teacher and 5 parents... and have fun while learning.


You will need:

Sliver

Spray bottle or can, warm water and dish washing liquid

1 x plastic bag 20cm x 20cm (8" x 8") or bigger

Step 1. 

Take Sliver, break off five lengths approx 25cm (10"). Gently open out fibres in each length to make a square.

Step 2.

Place the first square with fibres going from left to right. Place the next square on top, with the fibres going up and down. Place the remaining squares, alternating between crosswise and lenthwise directions.

Step 3

Make your own design with coloured fleece. Open out lengths and place on top layer.

Step 4

Spray your square gently with warm soapy water. Press down until water soaks in all over.

Step 5

Place plastic on top. Wet hands in soapy water. Rub gently across square for 5 - 10 minutes.

Step 6

Remove plastic. Turn square over. Place plastic on top and rub on other side for 5 - 10 minutes.

Step 7

Scrunch piece up and pat on table this way and that gently rotating.

Step 8.

Rinse in water under tap. Spin water out in your washing machine for half a minute.

Step 9.

You can flatten your picture out and place under a heavy book to finally dry and flatten, or gently iron with a warm iron.
