Card, Spin and Knit a Cocoon Shrug
This cosy cocoon shrug can be a lovely weekend (or two) project. Try carding your own custom blend of colours or fibres and knit your own today! The pattern is so simple you can easily adapt to any yarn thickness. Very beginner knitter friendly.
Happy knitting!

I used 500gms of Ashford Corriedale spun to a thick Aran weight yarn and I used 8mm needles.
Step 1 – Blend your fibre. I dizzed mine from the e-Carder to make ready to spin sliver (roving).
Step 2 – Spin and ply your fibre. Skein and set the twist by washing it.
Step 3 –Knit a 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4″) square in stocking stitch.
Count the number of stitches and in your swatch.
Save this info – you’ll need it to calculate how many stitches to cast on.
Step 5 – Calculate and cast on:
Use the following formula to calculate your cast-on stitches:
(A ÷ 10) × number of stitches in your swatch
Example: If A = 100 cm and your swatch has 20 stitches per 10 cm:
100 ÷ 10 = 10 × 20 = 200 stitches to cast on
Cast on this number of stitches.
Step 6 – Knit the Body:
Work in stocking stitch (knit one row, purl the next).
Continue until the fabric reaches the length of B (your neck-to-hem measurement).
Cast off then gently wash and block your rectangle flat to dry, smoothing to final dimensions.

Step 7 – Fold and sew:
Fold the rectangle like a diamond. Sew the short edges from the outer corners inward about 15 cm (6″) to form armholes.
Note – the photo to the left shows the finished garment – when you fold and sew it will not have the arm bands or the ribbed band on it.
Step 8 – Knit the collar band and arm cuffs:
For the collar band pick up stitches evenly around the edge. Work in K1, P1 ribbing in the round. Knit to the length you prefer. Cast off loosely.
For the arm cuffs pick up stitches evenly around the arm openings and knit in K1, P1 ribbing in the round. Knit to the length you prefer. Cast off loosely.
