Buttonholes in hand woven fabric
Have you wanted to put buttonholes in your precious hand woven fabric? Here is an easy way to do it.
Don’t be afraid to make buttonholes in your hand woven fabric – by adding buttons and buttonholes you can transform a simple shawl into a fashionable muti-way wrap.
I suggest doing a trial of buttonholes on a scrap of your hand woven fabrics to see how nicely they turn out.

- 1. Mark the position of the buttonholes on a piece of light woven interfacing and gently iron onto wrap as shown. I used a chalk pencil to draw buttonholes.

- 2. Position the wrap under the sewing machine with the buttonhole foot attached and place a piece of baking paper underneath to avoid the machine teeth grabbing the wool.

- 3. Make a button hole as shown (note we used bright thread for the photo) using a thread colour to complement the wrap.

- 4. Turn the wrap over and remove the baking paper – it should come off easily.

- 5. Gently ease back the black interfacing and using sharp small scissors, cut away the interfacing around the buttonhole.

- 6. Split the buttonhole from both ends toward the centre to avoid cutting ends of stitching.

- 7. You now have a buttonhole to hand finish using two strands of matching warp yarn.
